How many be gone/if they bomb barberships and salons/time to dot com

Yet another frustrating thing happened yesterday. I didn't post it as I needed time to ponder my response and to deal with the situation.

I was asked, sorry told, by one of the senior managers that I have to be available on the phone when I'm not in the office. Basically for all the hours that we are meant to be support our 'partner'. This equates to 7 hours of on call per week.

My frustration is with the fact that they have no right to dictate to me what I do in my personal time. Its up to me if I want to go home and drink gin from the bottle and sit in a pool of my own wee. I don't. But they can't tell me that I can't.

Unless they pay me.

And that's what it really comes down to, isn't it. They are asking me to be available for an additional 7 hours per week (taking into account lunch etc). Which is the same as asking me to work 5 days and do a day on call. I asked said manager if he would expect his staff to be on call on a saturday (which in a pesimistic, negative, being a pain-in-the-ass way it is).

And as usual... I got no response. I'm sure he has yelled at my line manager and I'll hear something soon enough. But I'm going to start shutting off my blackberry as soon as I go home. Until they come up with a reasonable rate of pay for 7 hours of on call per week.

Now I just need google to tell me the going on call rate for IT Managers. I think an additional £100/week sounds good... granted a toilet made of gold sounds good, but lets be reasonable. That would then equate to an additional £4700 per year (less 5 weeks holiday). Which would then take my salary up to the same as I was making on my last job.

How sad is that?
