A question rose from my soul / A question I began to hold / A pitchfork pinned to my chest / Will I, I not pass the test
Ah yes… the great IT Interview. Yesterday was my interview for the big bad new job that I so desperately want (need). Very large company, great package, very laid back (so laid back, I was the only one I saw with a suit on). However… the interview was meant to be with 2 people; the head of the department, and the line manager for the post. Sadly, the head of department was out of the office, so it was just him and me.
I did all the things that all the books (ok websites) say that you are meant to do, lots of eye contact, firm hand shake, positive appearance, confident yet not arrogant… but nothing. The man was a closed book to me. Now I can usually read most people at least a little bit. But this guy gave nothing away.
I was told ahead of time that it would be a ‘competency based’ interview. Which simply means that they are going to ask you a series of random questions about what the day to day tasks are and see if you can do them. So its all very subjective.
So after the mandatory speech of how great the company is and everything wonderful that they are doing… for 20 minutes… the interview actually started. Which is a bit frustrating as I had spent the last week studying every in and out of the company that I could find.
Then we got to the normal mandatory interview walk-me-through-your-cv section.
The rest of the interview went to plan… except… nope. Nothing. Not even a whiff of a hint that he liked or disliked me. Now the guy seemed to be a genuinely nice guy. Someone that you would like to go to the pub with for a few pints. But I’ll be damned if I know how I did.
Not even the test that I did online to see if my personality fit with the job roll came up (it didn't). All he was concerned with was if I could manage the day to day tasks. Now I did tick a lot of the boxes during the interview. The helpdesk package that they used, I actually deployed in my last job. The helpdesk package that they are thinking of buying was just deployed at the company that I work for now, so I know them both well. The company that they just signed a maintenance contract with is the same company that we used at my last job… I know the company well. I already have my ITIL Foundation Certification, which only one person at the company currently has, and they are about to start down the ITIL migration path. So really there wasn’t much more that I could have done. Suffice to say I felt I got lucky with that many things in common with them.
So now I just need to wait until the middle of next week to see how I got on. Stay tuned for more.
